New York signed its 3D printing law on May 28th. California passed AB 2047 through the full Assembly the day before. Three laws in under ninety days — and there is a part of the New York law that is already in effect right now that almost nobody is talking about. The blocking technology mandate has an escape hatch. The law creates a working group that has one year to study whether the technology is even feasible — and if they say it can't be built, the mandate never triggers. But the felony file provisions under sections 2.10 and 2.11 are not tied to that working group. Distributing or possessing design files that can produce major firearm components is a Class E felony in New York today. California's version goes further. It's a misdemeanor to disable or circumvent the blocking software on your own printer. Not to print a gun. Just to run Klipper. Just to use OrcaSlicer on a machine it wasn't designed for. New York's Law Has a Loophole. California Doesn't.
Anycubic Kobra 4 review: the summer sale made the 4 color Combo cheaper than the single color Kobra X. Worth it? Everybody looked at the Anycubic Kobra 4 and asked the same question. Why buy it when the Kobra X does more for about the same money? For most of this year, that was fair. Then the AliExpress summer sale dropped and flipped the math. The Kobra 4 Combo, with the ACE 2 Pro four color system and active filament drying, now lands cheaper than the single color Kobra X, and the bare Kobra 4 comes in at a price that's hard to argue with. Here's the full rundown of what the Kobra 4 brings: the ACE 2 Pro for multicolor and filament management with active drying from 35 to 65 degrees while you print, LeviQ3.0 49 point auto leveling and the clean first layers that come with it, automatic Anycubic filament recognition, a 260 millimeter cube build volume, a hardened steel nozzle as standard where the Bambu A1 ships stainless, and a 600 millimeter per second top speed. I run real prints off my own plate, including a 22 hour four color Avatar dragon set, and I keep it straight about where the Kobra X still wins and how to think about multicolor waste before you buy. It sticks to PLA and PETG, which is what most of us print anyway, and during this sale, June 1st through 10th, it's one of the easiest budget multicolor recommendations to make. This is a sale price, so once the window closes I wouldn't count on seeing it this low again. Bambu Studio 2.7.1 is the public release built on top of the 2.7 beta, and it brings a real stack of upgrades to multicolor 3D printing. This walkthrough breaks down every single change so you know exactly what each one does and whether it actually matters for your setup. No jargon. Just clear explanations made for beginners. We start with the 2.7 beta. The headline feature is Texture to Color Painting, which takes the artwork baked into a model and turns it into real multicolor paint on the surface. This walkthrough takes you from the moment you cut the box open to running your first print, with every step in order and nothing skipped. The U1 ships with a lot of tape. I mean a lot. The first thing I'll show you is how to strip it all out so you don't miss anything hiding under the build plate or behind the tool head swapper. After that, we go through the toolbox contents, the filament feeders, the PTFE tubes, the filament holders, and the four tool heads. The tool head install trips a lot of people up the first time around. There's a yellow sticker that tells you which one goes in first, and a red sticker on the brackets that tells you when each one is ready to slot in. I show you what it looks like when you miss the alignment hole so you can fix it fast if it happens to you. Then we power it on, run the Wi-Fi setup, scan the QR code through the Snapmaker app, and kick off the 20 minute calibration. I show you which slot each one goes in, and we run the dragon model as the first print with dynamic flow and time lapse turned on. Colorado just signed 3D printing legislation into law. Here's what changed in 24 hours — and why New York is now the most urgent fight in the country. Governor Jared Polis signed HB 26-1144 on May 5, 2026. Effective July 1st. That makes Colorado the second state with a signed 3D printing law on the books. But the law has a definition problem that most people aren't talking about — it defines 3D printing as both additive AND subtractive manufacturing. That means CNC machines, milling equipment, and router tables are legally 3D printers under Colorado law. Woodworkers, machinists, and engineers who have nothing to do with firearms just got pulled into a ghost gun manufacturing statute. Meanwhile New York's state budget is on its 9th extender — over a month past the April 1st deadline. The 3D printer provisions are still inside the bill. Firmware blocking mandate.
