The Bambu Lab A1 and A1 mini share the same toolhead, the same speed and the same AMS lite multicolor option. The difference is size. The A1 prints 256 mm cubes and the mini 180 mm, and the A1 bed heats to 100°C against the mini’s 80°C. Pick the A1 if you want room to grow. Pick the mini if desk space and price come first.

Nick owns several of each and still prints on his first A1 and his first A1 mini. He hasn’t filmed the two side by side on the same print, so this page compares them on Bambu Lab’s own specs and today’s prices, and adds what he has said about living with both.

The real difference is the bed

Everything that decides print quality is shared. Both use the same all metal hot end, the same 500 mm/s top speed and the same full auto calibration. So the question is mostly what you want to print and where the printer will live.

The A1’s 256 mm cube is the same build volume as Bambu’s enclosed P1S and P2S. Helmets, large cosplay parts and big plates of small parts fit. The mini’s 180 mm cube suits figures, gifts and most household fixes, and it sits on a desk at 347 by 315 mm.

The bed temperature gap matters too. The A1 bed reaches 100°C and the mini’s 80°C. Bambu lists the same ideal filaments for both, PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA, and marks ABS, ASA, PC and PA as not recommended on either. Nick says the same about the A1: it’s an open frame printer, so ABS and ASA are out. That’s at 10:20 in his beginner printers video.

Is the Bambu Lab A1 safe?

This comes up because of the 2024 recall. In January 2024 Bambu Lab said some A1 heatbed cables were getting damaged where the cable meets the base, which could affect temperature readings and cause power loss or even short circuits. In the same post it said the A1 mini is not affected. That’s Bambu’s own post from January 28, 2024.

A week later Bambu widened it to a recall of every A1 on the market, whatever its condition, and asked owners to stop using them until it was fixed. Store buyers could take a full refund plus an 80 dollar voucher, or keep the printer, get a new heatbed and a 120 dollar voucher, and add six months to the warranty. Bambu expected the batch with the revised cable around May 2024. The details are in its February 4, 2024 update.

The A1 sold today lists an upgraded heatbed cable on Bambu’s store page, with Kevlar reinforcement, thicker insulation, nylon sleeving and a longer strain relief. Nick has run several A1s for thousands of hours with minimal issues, in his words. If you’re buying used, ask whether the recall work was done.

Which AMS works with the A1 and A1 mini?

Both Combos come with the AMS lite, Bambu’s open four spool unit. That’s the simple answer for most people.

If you want the enclosed AMS, the drying AMS 2 Pro or the AMS HT, both printers need the AMS HUB accessory (SA013) first, according to Bambu’s store pages for the A1 and the A1 mini. Nick hasn’t run either printer with those units, so that route is not tested by Nick.

What he has learned with the AMS lite on both:

  • It sits out in the open by default. He mounts it on top of the printer, even on the mini, because his printers sit a few feet from his desk. Mini mods video, 0:43.
  • A roll that tumbled off his AMS lite wrecked a 17 hour print, so he printed spool holder locks. A1 mods video, 1:40.
  • The AMS lite filament hub is his number one clog area, because filament left loaded too long goes brittle and snaps. A1 clog fixes video, 0:34.
  • He has never had a belt issue on his A1 or A1 mini. A1 mini maintenance video, 11:21.

Keep it running. Nick’s printable A1 maintenance checklist is on the A1 maintenance page, and his starter tool list is on essential tools.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the A1 if you want one printer that won’t feel small in a year. The 256 mm bed fits larger parts and full plates, and the 100°C bed gives you more headroom. At 299 dollars it’s the same build volume as Bambu’s enclosed machines for a lot less.

Choose the A1 mini if it has to live on a desk, it’s a gift for a beginner or a kid, or most of what you print fits in a 180 mm cube. It’s the cheapest way into Bambu’s printers and app, and in the Black Friday sale it’s 199 dollars.

Both are open frame printers, so neither is the pick for ABS or ASA. And whichever you pick, Nick’s advice in his beginner video is that a solid low cost printer like these is the smart first step, because most people end up with a second printer later. Our beginner printers guide compares the A1 with two other first printers.

A1 vs A1 mini questions

What is the difference between the Bambu Lab A1 and A1 mini?

Size. The A1 prints up to 256 x 256 x 256 mm with a bed that reaches 100°C. The A1 mini prints up to 180 x 180 x 180 mm with an 80°C bed. Speed, hot end, nozzle and AMS lite support are the same.

Is the A1 mini worth it over the A1?

If most of your prints fit in a 180 mm cube and desk space matters, yes. It’s 80 dollars less than the A1 on its own. If you might print larger parts, the A1 is the safer buy.

Is the Bambu Lab A1 safe now?

Bambu recalled every A1 in February 2024 over damaged heatbed cables and offered a refund or a replacement heatbed. The A1 sold today lists an upgraded heatbed cable on Bambu’s store page. Bambu said the A1 mini was not affected.

Can the A1 or A1 mini use the AMS 2 Pro?

Yes, with the AMS HUB accessory (SA013). Bambu’s store pages say it is needed to connect the AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT to either printer. Both Combos ship with the AMS lite.

Can the A1 or A1 mini print ABS?

Bambu lists ABS, ASA, PC and PA as not recommended on both. They are open frame printers. PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA are ideal.

How much are the A1 and A1 mini on Black Friday?

Bambu’s sale page lists the A1 Combo at 359 dollars and the A1 mini at 199 dollars from October 27 to December 1, 2026. It lists no sale price for the A1 alone or the A1 mini Combo.
